The great debate – curtains or shutters – rages on! Many people like to adorn their windows with swags, pelmets and curtains while others prefer venetian blinds Essex or plantation shutters.
Those on the side of curtains prefer them as they say they feel warmer and cosier. They like the texture and the drape of curtains – and they are often cheaper than blinds.
Personally I am a shutter woman and I am not alone. Wooden blinds or shutters give a home a contemporary feel and they can also give a higher level of privacy. Curtains are by default open or closed. With shutters you can leave them down but open so that they let the light, but not the prying eyes, in. Shutters are also so much more hygienic. Unless you wash curtains regularly (and let's face it, who does?) they can pick up dust and cooking smells. Shutters can be wiped clean in a few minutes using one of those handy little gadgets to pick up the dust.
For me and for many others there is no comparison. Curtains often look fussy and overdone, frilly and ornate, in fact downright old-fashioned – whereas shutters look minimalist, stylish, elegant and modern.
The debate goes on, curtain woman versus shutter woman, and each is firmly convinced that they are in the right. Only I know I am!
